Children
For children requiring a surgical procedure the hospital provides the opportunity to meet nursing and theatre staff prior to their admission. During a pre-admission visit you and your child are able to familiarise yourselves with the hospital and it provides an opportunity to ask questions. Please call hospital reception on (03) 5022 2611 if you would like to arrange a pre-admission visit.
On the day of their procedure your child should wear their own pyjamas or loose fitting clothing such as a tracksuit and t-shirt. Bring your child’s favourite teddy or toy, pillow, disposable nappies, dummy and feeding bottles if required. Your child will be given an “Izzy Bear” show bag which helps allay their fear and anxiety.
Your child should not feel excessive pain after their procedure. At first your child may appear teary and unsettled however this is normal and usually due to the anaesthetic and feeling of insecurity of the unfamiliar environment. Before offering any food or drink to your child please discuss with your nurse the type or amount of food that may be offered.
Children are given the option of walking to the operating room if possible or alternatively we have a special car for children aged between two and six to go to theatre. A parent is welcome to accompany their child to handover to operating room staff and also to collect your child from the recovery room once awake.
Children undergoing a day procedure will be given specific instructions regarding their care at home. Your child should be fully supervised for twenty-four hours following surgery and it is important to keep your child indoors and rested. If your child is staying overnight we encourage one parent to stay overnight and assist in their child’s care.
Meals are provided complimentary for one carer however other family members may order and pay for a meal at reception. Free Wi-Fi is available for patients and visitors throughout the hospital. Please ask the nursing staff for a password to access Wi-Fi.
